What is it worth knowing about the Paznaun valley?

The Paznaun valley, usually just Paznaun, is a 40 kilometre side valley to the Stanzer valley and branches off from this in Pians. The V-shaped valley extends to Bieler Höhe where it borders onto Vorarlberg federal state. It extends from 900 to 1,800 metres above sea level. The valley is drained by the Trisanna river and surrounded by the Verwall and Samnaun Group and the Silvretta mountains. The highest peak in Paznaun is the 3,399 metre Fluchthorn.

A brief history of Paznaun

The region around Ischgl and Galtür, the Upper Paznaun, was populated by the Romansch people from Engadine in the 9th century and was just used as grazing land to start with. The Lower Paznaun, that’s the area around Kappl and See, was occupied on the other hand by the spread from Serfaus and Fiss. The valley was mentioned for the first time in a document as Baschenowe in 1275 and has been called Paznaun since about 1400. Tourism is the inhabitants’ main source of income today.

What do you need to know about See in the Paznaun valley?

The town of See originated around 1400. It is the first town in the Paznaun valley and has 1,219 inhabitants today at an altitude of 1,056 metres above sea level. Although See also lives from tourism, it is quite a bit quieter here than in nearby Ischgl.

How can you get to the Paznaun valley?

See is of course most convenient to reach by car. Coming from Germany, you take the A7 motorway to the end and then continue over the toll-free Fernpass road to Imst. You follow the signs to Landeck there, take the A12 toll motorway or alternatively the B 171. As you leave Landeck, the B 188 then branches off into the Paznaun valley.

If travelling via Munich, you follow the A8 first to Rosenheim and then cross the border on the A 93 near Kiefersfelden. From here you take the A 12 toll motorway past Landeck where you then take the B171 to See via Ischgl.

By train it’s most convenient to travel as far as Landeck where all the fast trains also stop. From there, you can get to the Weisses Lamm hotel in about 20 minutes by public bus or taxi.

The nearest airport is in Innsbruck Kranebitten. It is about 85 kilometres away from the hotel and can be reached in an hour by taxi.

Do I need winter tyres or snow chains to get to Paznaun?

Winter tyres are mandatory in Austria from 1 November to 15 April in wintry driving conditions. In the event of heavy snowfalls, mandatory snow chains can also be announced at short notice which is why it is recommended that you have snow chains with you.

How far away is the Weisses Lamm hotel from me?

See is approximately 180 kilometres away from Munich and you reach your destination from Stuttgart in 310 km. Frankfurt am Main is 510 km away from us and it’s about 730 km to reach your holiday destination from Düsseldorf. 760 km separate Berlin and Paznaun and it’s 920 km from Hamburg to See. Vienna is 560 km away from us and it’s 220 km to Zurich.

Is there a skiing area in See?

Of course there’s a skiing area here, See is well-known and popular with guests and locals as a family skiing area. You glide up the mountain quickly and in comfort by gondola directly from the town and are on your skis just a few minutes later.

How many lifts and slopes does the skiing area have?

41 kilometres of moderate and easy slopes and 9 lifts are available to skiers and snowboarders here. The lifts take you up to 2,500 metres and with the new Versingbahn beautiful powder snow slopes have been opened up that were only accessible to ski tourers before.


How reliable is the snow in the skiing area?

Paznaun valley is actually know as being a region with reliable snow, in particular as the skiing area extends up to 2,500 metres. But if the winter doesn’t really get going until a bit later on, it’s good to know that all the slopes in See have snow-making facilities.

Which skiing areas are there in the Paznaun valley?

See is of course not the only skiing area in this corner of Tyrol. The most well-known ski resort is undoubtedly Ischgl Samnaun, which is always one of the first areas to open the season and is open until the start of May. At the end of the valley, the Silvretta Galtür ski resort is well worth a visit and the skiing area of Kappl between Ischgl and See that is rapidly becoming a meeting point for freeriders.

Do the lifts also run in summer?

The Medrigjochbahn in See also takes you from the valley up to 1,800 metres in the summer, opening up a wonderful hiking terrain to you in Lower Paznaun. There are also several gondolas and lifts open in Ischgl.

How far away is Ischgl from the Weisses Lamm hotel?

The ski resort of Ischgl can be reached by car from See in less than 20 minutes. There is of course a bus connection too that takes you to and back again from Ischgl free of charge with a valid ski pass.

What makes Ischgl so special?

Ischgl ski resort particularly stands out due to its size and reliable snow. 45 modern cable cars transport up to 93,000 skiers per hour up to the top where 238 kilometres of slopes then await you. Endless skiing fun awaits you here thanks to the merger with Samnaun. 1,100 snow cannons help out if there should happen to be a lack of natural snow, thus guaranteeing skiing from November to the start of May.

A number of mountain farms and inns can be reached on well-kept hiking trails and tempt you with typical local specialities. There is also a signposted network of trails for mountain bikers here and even the gondolas take bikers.

Climbers will find a large natural playground for their hobby here and can go wild in all levels of difficulty. All fans of outdoor sports get their money’s worth here and can try out everything from rafting to canyoning and high-rope courses.

What is there to do in the evening in Paznaun valley?

In winter you experience après-ski with Tyrolean hospitality in See and there are many bars and restaurants all year round that want to make your stay something really special. A lively night life with several clubs and discos also awaits you in Ischgl that can also hold its own by international comparison.

Are there shopping opportunities nearby?

There are several supermarkets in See where you can purchase all the everyday items you need. There is also a village dairy and farm shop in See that indulge you with local delicacies.
